Special Projects

Ahmed Salah Al-Mahdi is an Egyptian author, translator, and literary critic who specializes in fantasy, science fiction and children’s literature. He’s published multiple novels in Arabic and has translated two of them into English: Reem: Into the Unknown and Malaz: City of Resurrection. He’s also published many short stories, poems, and articles in Arabic and in translation in various languages.
Black Winter is a Young Adult novel: a post-apocalyptic coming of age where young adult siblings are suddenly thrust into an extremely isolating life or death survival situation during a nuclear winter in Egypt. (Ziyad is a first year engineering student, and Farida is a high school senior.)
Ahmed and I are editing and rewriting his English translation of his Arabic novel to expand the story for an international young adult audience – bringing the sister into a more prominent position in the book, and incorporating more of Egypt and Egyptian culture into the story.
